Heading home after work today, I heard a news bit on the radio about counties wanting to pass laws forbidding people from jumping off bridges into rivers. The people for this law say the water is murky and have fast currents that are dangerous. People caught jumping would be fined or partake in public service. But are laws prohibiting this necessary? Wouldn’t people jumping off bridges know the water is murky and have fast currents? I don’t believe such laws are necessary. Activities people do that pose no harm to any others but themselves should be those people’s freedom, but if the activity can pose harm to others, then laws and rules are acceptable for all’s pursuit of happiness.

Unneeded Laws
August 15, 2011Church and State
November 17, 2009All these years later from when the separation of church and state was put to paper, we still struggle with it. Most recently, I think this has been lost as being cited for when people argue for and against same sex marriage. If one follows the constitution, then this shouldn’t be an argument at all…at least for us as a state.

President Speeches
September 8, 2009I’m disappointed that I’ll be working when the president is giving his speech about healthcare reform to a joint session of Congress tomorrow night. Since I was to watch these kind of speeches since high school during President George W. Bush’s administration, I’ve made it a habit to try and catch as many of these as I can, whether I agree or not with the current administration. These people do it to allow not just Congress, but everyone what the president wishes to get done and how he wants to get it done; why would you not be glad to have a leader letting you in on what he or she wishes to do? Whether they’re Republican or Democrat, it’s a sign of democracy and good leadership. I’m disappointed that I’ll miss this (maybe I’ll catch a little on a break or lunch), but I’m glad our leaders do these things to let the people know directly from them so they’re informed instead of receiving the information through other sources. Whether Republican or Democrat, be glad our leaders do this at all, whether they are Republican or Democrat, because we’re all Americans in the end, and not everyone in the world gets to hear and respond to what their leaders wish to accomplish for us all.
