Comic Reviews for 7/4/12

July 9, 2012

More exciting stories came out last week, and I must say Earth 2 is quickly becoming one of my favorite comics. Also out last week, more great Bat adventures, the Punisher fails at disguises, and Danger Club continues to amaze.

Comic Reviews for 6/6/12

June 12, 2012

I’m finally caught up on the issues I missed last week, and I included those reviews below; that’s why this week’s list is so big. As for the new books, I checked out a few more independent #1s from Valiant, Image, and Boom!, DC’s Earth 2 books continue to impress me, and three of my favorite comics came out as well. Overall, a really good week.

Comic Reviews for 05/02/12

May 8, 2012

Another week of comics looked at here, and since all of them were exciting, it didn’t take me long to get them all read. This week’s worth of comics started exciting things like Earth 2 in DC Comics, more of Night of the Owls, and the next wave of Valiant comics. I also checked out Daredevil outside of its crossover with other Marvel books, I began another Marvel crossover, and Avengers vs X-men heats up.

Comic Reviews for 04/25/12

May 3, 2012

I’m a bit late in getting this up, but I’ve been busy procrastinating lately :)   This Saturday is also Free Comic Book Day at comic stores all over the country, so I’ll include what I pick up and check out the week after.  As for the end of April comics, I picked up a few disappointments that I wish to share my thoughts on briefly, a couple crossovers had their final issues come out, and one of those crossovers had every issue be my favorite for the last three weeks!

Comic Reviews for 04/04/12

April 9, 2012

Last week was a good week, and I wrote a brief review looking at each issue’s story for every issue I picked up but three. This week, we had Avengers vs X-men kick off with its first issue, I picked up a fair amount of Image comics, and I include two digital-first comics I purchased last Wednesday.

Comic Reviews for 03/28/12

April 4, 2012

It’s Wednesday, which means more new comics are out and that I better get last week’s finished and reviewed by giving my brief thoughts on their stories. I had planned to have this done yesterday, but I felt terrible and didn’t get much of anything done but nap. This week saw the final or penultimate issues of a miniseries or regular series, a crossover that had both the first and second parts come out in the same week, and I consider some editor choics when presenting crossovers.

Comic Reviews for 03/07/12

March 14, 2012

The beginning of a new month!…well, last week it was for new comics anyway. After this round of reviews, I’ll probably not include a brief review for every comic I get in the future, because sometimes I read and enjoy an issue but don’t have anything to say for whatever reason. Anyway, this week we had a return to apocalypse, the beginning of the next fight against “the Rot”, and a new Fables spinoff!

Comic Reviews for 02/15/12

February 22, 2012

Well, today is Wednesday, which means new comics in stores, so I better get last week’s comics read and reviewed before more arrive. Last week, I tried a new one that I’m afraid I won’t stay on, IDW delivers the best comic of the week, Batman makes up for its last issue, and lots of great art all around!

Amazing Spider-man #679.1 (Marvel) – I decided to “get the point,” but I’m afraid it just didn’t pique my interest. Maybe again in the future.

Avengers #22 (Marvel) – Things continue to not look so good for the Avengers, and the mystery of Norman Osborn’s superpowers continues to baffle everyone. I hope things pick up next issue, but I’ll always let one “filler” issue go in order to set up more of the story.

Birds of Prey #6 (DC) – Just when things begin to look better, it gets worse. The suspense for next month’s issue is going to be annoying for me.

Batman #6 (DC) – This issue almost makes up for everything I didn’t like in the last issue. Batman finally fights back, although the image that reinvigorates him is the driving force behind his entire life, so I’m not sure about him forgetting that while down in the labyrinth. Nevertheless, it’s time to wake the other Talons!

Blue Beetle #6 (DC) – I’m only giving this title more time because it is one of my favorite characters, but this fighting/threatening/killing of friends and family is a sick new direction for this book. What made this character fun was all of Jaime’s best friends and family working together in the old series. At least he’s leaving them behind and a crossover with Green Lantern Corps is coming up. Maybe once Jaime returns with more control over the scarab this hero will find his way again.

Catwoman #6 (DC) – Quite an intense first story arc. Now that the character’s background has been established, I’m sure the next story arcs will be even more intense.

DC Universe Online Legends #23 (DC) – Why can’t more epic events be like this? Although a dark story, particularly the ending of this one, I’ve enjoyed all the twists and turns in it. I wish more people would pick it up, but since it’s outside continuity, I guess many pass it up; even I will pass on titles that won’t impact overall continuity, which is unfortunate since I miss out on experiencing a good story.

Fables #114 (Vertigo/DC) – I’m afraid bad things are in store for the Cubs but some comical things are building in Oz.

Fear Itself: The Fearless #9 (Marvel) – Okay, the illustration of Storm’s waterspouts was outstanding! And now, Red Skull gets anxious to fulfill her mission before Valkyrie foils it; only three issues left to this miniseries.

Green Lantern Corps #6 (DC) – Wow; two ruthless killings by the heroes. A Green Lantern snaps another Green Lantern’s neck and the Corps drops a Fear bomb. These “heroes” have fallen off the heroic path, I’m afraid but at least this arc is over.

Invincible Iron Man #513 (Marvel) – The villains continue their devious deeds, and now Tony Stark knows who’s behind it all. What he does with that knowledge while in the custody of the U.S. Military will have to wait until next issue.

Legion of Superheroes #6 (DC) – Lots of things are going on here; I’ve enjoyed this title every issue, but I’ll be digging out #1-5 and reading through them once more to refresh it all.

New Avengers #21 (Marvel) – This issue had a great fight with beautiful art by Mike Deodato and colors by Paul Mounts.

Nightwing #6 (DC) – What a mess Dick Grayson has to deal with next issue. Not the way you want a memorial show to go.

Red Hood and the Outlaws #6 (DC) – An interesting flashback issue with how Red Hood (Jason Todd) met Starfire. I guess she remembers being teammates with Nightwing from the old DCU but can’t recall certain details. I’m going to guess most of the DC characters are feeling this confusion (as are the fans) and the old DCU may not be as dead as it seems. However, whatever big crossover event DC is building to will probably finish that hope off for this fan.

Star Trek/Legion of Superheroes #5 (IDW) – This issue was excellent! One tease early on, and I couldn’t get any more excited for that ending. Lots of nice time travel cameos in a beautiful two page spread. Great writing; great art; great book!

Super Dinosaur #8 (Image) – Another series that’s just fun to read. This issue had lots of action, and being in two places at once can always lead to some humorous lines.

Supergirl #6 (DC) – Can’t wait for next issue’s “Battle of New York.” Things just got even worse for Supergirl, and a nice two-page spread by Mahmud Asrar for the final pages.

Ultimate Comics X-Men #7 (Marvel) – Okay, now I’m thinking that either all these dead characters in a dead-means-dead universe are returning or some powerful force is manipulating these characters. When both returned characters say their doing God’s will word for word, I begin to think they aren’t who they say they are.

Winter Soldier #2 (Marvel) – Brubaker’s espionage is back! Butch Guice’s art is great, capturing the tone of the story, and it’s good to see Nick Fury back in action, no matter how brief.

Wonder Woman #6 (DC) – One of my favorite titles DC is putting out right now. The queen of the Gods may have been dealt with, but her target still remains in peril. I can’t wait to see Wonder Woman vs Hades in the Underworld!

Young Justice #13 (DC) – This wasn’t the best issue to follow up on last month’s issue, the best comic I’ve read in a long time. The story was centered on Aqualad and building to the next story arc, so this issue wrapped up everything from last issue quickly. Now I’ll see if this quick conclusion leads to a promising new arc or not next month.

Be here next week for more.
